Owner Kevin Chen Keeps Hunan Dynasty a Levittown Favorite
The Asian eatery, renovated in April, is known for reasonable prices and attentive service.
Although Hunan Dynasty spent its first years at a location in Bethpage, Owner Kevin Chen says it really found its home when it moved to Levittown in 2003. Since then it has become a town staple, serving loyal customers from Levittown, but also attracting residents from East Meadow, Bethpage, Hicksville and beyond. Chen said the move felt right for them and he was surprised by how large the restaurant space was. The location within the Tri-County Flea Market shopping center also helps to draw in new customers.
Since that move seven years ago, the restaurant has steadily been growing in status and making changes along the way. In April they completed an extensive renovation, one that addressed both décor changes as well as behind the scenes improvements like a new air conditioning system for greater customer comfort. Chen said the renovation has paid off in an increase in business, especially with new customers.
In addition to the changes to the restaurant, Manager Tom Tan explains that it's Chen who really makes the experience at Hunan special. He said that Chen's emphasis on cleanliness goes above and beyond what he has seen at other restaurants in his over 40 years of experience working in the industry.

Chen is a constant presence in the dining area and kitchen, encouraging the attentive customer service Hunan has become known for. It's not unusual for Chen himself to keep an eye on small but important details like when a diner needs more water and then refill his or her glass himself. "We know he's paying close attention and that makes us do the same," Tan said of the owner.
Following the renovation, more customers have been booking Hunan for private events. Tan said that they have done events of every kind from showers and birthdays to communions and farewell parties. The dining area has a separate elevated section and while it's not completely private, Tan said they are always sure to reserve plenty of space for the party to be comfortable. They can accommodate functions large and small, with some parties hosting over 60 people.

When asked about how the restaurant has fared in this tough economy, Chen explained that Hunan Dynasty has braced for the recession like any other establishment but that he has not seen any decrease in business. Much of that could be due to the restaurant's value; customers can be assured of a great meal and exemplary service without having to splurge at a pricey restaurant. Hunan's prices are modest and customers leave feeling as if they have gotten more for their money than they would at other places. Chen hopes to keep that reputation going strong and looks forward to remaining a part of the Levittown family.
