LEVITTOWN, NY—Legislator John R. Ferretti Jr. plans to hold a town hall meeting later this month to discuss the new bail reform law that officially took effect Jan. 1.

Called "Understanding the Dangers of Albany's Bail Reform," the town hall meeting will be hosted by both Ferretti and Lt. Brian Sullivan, the president of Nassau County Correction Officers Benevolent Associations.

According to Ferretti, the goal of the meeting is to help residents understand the state's new bail reform laws.

Bail reform, according to the Gov. Andrew Cuomo's website, will significantly reduce the number of people held in jail prior to trial. "Specifically, cash bail will be eliminated for misdemeanors and non-violent felonies, alongside a new requirement that police officers must issue desk appearance tickets to most people charged with misdemeanors and Class E felonies."

Critics of the new law, however, argue that it goes too far and now makes it easier for dangerous people to get back on the streets.
