Town Postpones Cat Colony Relocation, Animal Shelter Tours

TOH Places Relocation of Bellmore Cat Colony on Hold

Earlier this week, the Town of Hempstead placed the relocation of the Newbridge Road Park cat colony in Bellmore, originally scheduled for Tuesday, on hold. The town will work with the Humane Society to assess the colony at the park and to explore options concerning the habitat where the cats have settled.

No action will be taken until the Humane Society looks at the situation, consults the town and offers its recommendations.

Town Receives US EPA Award

At an April 27 ceremony, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented its 2012 Environmental Quality Award to Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray. The award was called "the highest recognition presented to the public by the EPA" in a letter announcing Hempstead Town’s selection. The town was recognized at the EPA's Manhattan offices for Hempstead's creation of Long Island’s one-of-a-kind renewable energy park.

The town's Renewable Energy Park in Point Lookout is home to a host of innovative green energy projects, many of which have been funded with federal and state grants, as well as LIPA energy credits. Some of the features at the park include a 100-kilowatt wind turbine, a 60-kilowatt solar field, a series of geothermal wells (provide heating and cooling to town offices), as well as Long Island's only hydrogen fueling station, which powers up pollution free fuel cell automobiles.

In the Environmental Quality Award announcement, EPA Regional Administrator Judith Enck stated of the awardees, "Each year, EPA searches for those who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to protecting and enhancing environmental quality and public health."

Town Hosting Animal Shelter Tours

The Hempstead Town Animal Shelter will host two free educational tours on Saturday, May 19.

The tours will be given at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. In keeping with the theme of "Be Kind to Animals Week," shelter staff will give lectures on how to take care of animals and what can be done to help homeless animals. Staffers will discuss how the animals come to the shelter, the adoption process, proper pet care and the Pet Foster Program. Tours of the kennels will also be given.

All visitors who bring treats and/or toys for the shelter animals will be eligible for a door prize. There will also be raffles and baked goods for sale. Proceeds benefit the "Tails of Hope Fund," an organization helping to fund extraordinary medical surgeries for dogs and cats.
