Trojans Top MacArthur in OT

Garden City kicker Gerard Smith hits a 31 yard field goal in overtime to defeat a scrappy MacArthur General's team.

The Garden City Trojans moved their record to 2-0 after pulling out a tight 10-7 overtime victory over MacArthur. In a game that was scoreless at halftime and at times looked like neither team wanted to win, ended with a flurry for GC.

Each team struggled to mount much of an attack on offense as the two defenses clamped down when they had to. MacArthur broke through first with a long drive in the third quarter capped by a touchdown reception by Jared Wolfe with 4:46 left in the quarter.

The Trojans mounted a strong drive of their own to counter the score and looked like they were going to put points on the board but Gerard Smith missed wide left.

The Garden City defense held the Generals scoreless in the fourth quarter and gave the offense a chance for a comeback. And the boys didn't let Coach Flatley down.

Mixing in a strong ground game with a couple of timely passes Brett Stewart guided the Trojans down the field. Getting a couple of bursts from Brian Haeffner around the end along with a quick strike to Mike Collins over the middle and the team was in the red zone. With 58 seconds left in the game Stewart dove into the end zone from the three yard line and Garden City was an extra point away from the tie. And Smith drilled the extra point home and the game was headed to overtime.

MacArthur had the first possession from the twenty yard line and drove the ball to the one yard line. But on third down Ryan Blair made a game saving tackle for a four yard loss. The ensuing field goal attempt was then blocked as Matt Borges and Tom Wright broke through the left side of the line.

Garden City then took their possession from the twenty yard line but could not muster a first down. With a fourth and four from the 14 yard line the Trojans lined up for the potential game winning field goal. And this time Smith drilled the 31 yarder through the uprights and the boys had their second win of the season.

The next game is on Saturday, the 28th at Mepham, a 39-17 winner over Calhoun.
