2 Popular Suffolk Beaches Closed After Bacteria Testing

County health officials say the Huntington and Lindenhurst beaches will reopen once bacteria levels return to acceptable limits.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Two Suffolk County beaches have been closed to bathing after testing found bacteria levels exceeding acceptable criteria, county health officials said.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services announced the closures at Gold Star Battalion Beach in Huntington and Venetian Shores Beach in Lindenhurst.

Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott said swimming in bacteria-contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat.

The beaches will reopen after additional testing shows bacteria levels have fallen back within acceptable limits, officials said.

Residents can get the latest information on beach conditions by calling the Suffolk County Bathing Beach hotline at 631-852-5822 or the county Office of Ecology at 631-852-5760 during business hours.
