Don't Swim At These 3 Babylon Beaches After Heavy Rain

BABYLON, NY — Three Town of Babylon beaches are under a swimming advisory following heavy rainfall, Suffolk County health officials said Friday.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services issued the advisory because bacteria levels at the beaches could exceed New York State standards following stormwater runoff.

The affected beaches are:

• Amityville Village Beach, Amityville
• Tanner Park, Copiague
• Venetian Shores Beach, Lindenhurst

Health officials said stormwater runoff from surrounding areas can carry contaminants into waterways and temporarily raise bacteria levels.

Swimming and other water contact should be avoided until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles, or at least 24 hours after the rain ends, officials said.

The advisory is expected to be lifted Saturday, Aug. 22, at 8 a.m.

The three beaches are among 63 across Suffolk County covered by Friday's rainfall-related advisory.

Officials also advised residents to use caution in other waterways affected by stormwater runoff, even if they are not designated bathing beaches.
