DWI Suspect Crashes Into Suffolk Police Car, Injuring Officer: PD

A Copiague man faces a felony DWI charge after a crash with a patrol car sent him and an officer to the hospital, police said.

COPIAGUE, NY — A Copiague man was arrested on a felony DWI charge Thursday night after police said he crashed into a patrol car, injuring himself and an officer.

Julio Zelaya, 39, was driving a 2004 Acura TL east on Montauk Highway when he attempted to turn left onto Hawkins Boulevard in front of a patrol car traveling west on Montauk Highway at about 9:46 p.m., Suffolk County police said.

The vehicles collided, police said.

Zelaya and Officer Jordan Tozitsky, 32, were both taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Zelaya was charged with driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction for a designated offense within 10 years, a Class E felony, police said.

He is expected to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
