LINDENHURST, NY — A Brentwood man was arrested Tuesday after police said he fled the scene of an early-morning crash that killed a pedestrian on Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst.
A 56-year-old man was crossing westbound Sunrise Highway at North Indiana Avenue at about 4:25 a.m. when he was struck by a 2012 Honda Accord, Suffolk County police said.
The driver fled the scene in the vehicle, police said.
The pedestrian, who police described as undomiciled, was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Following an investigation by Suffolk County police Major Case Unit detectives, Daniel Gomez, 65, of Brentwood, was arrested at his home, police said.
Gomez was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving a fatality. He was scheduled to be held overnight at the Third Precinct and arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
Sunrise Highway was closed for a time following the crash but later reopened in both directions, police previously told Patch.
