AMITYVILLE, NY — An Amityville graduate student pursuing degrees in law and social work has been selected for an academic-year internship with ERASE Racism, a Long Island-based civil rights organization.

Jeanine Guelee, a graduate of Walter G. O'Connell Copiague High School and Stony Brook University, is currently pursuing a law degree at Touro Law Center and a master's degree in social work at Stony Brook University, the organization announced Monday.

The internship, which runs throughout the academic year, fulfills a requirement of Guelee's master's program and will provide her with experience in civil rights advocacy.

Guelee will focus on ERASE Racism's Education Equity Initiative, including its Student Task Force and Long Island Leaders of Tomorrow Conferences, as well as its Inclusive Housing Program.

Based in Syosset, ERASE Racism works to address structural racism, particularly in public education and housing. The organization conducts research, advocates for policy changes, pursues legal action and works to educate and mobilize communities.

Its advocacy efforts extend across Long Island and New York State, as well as through national coalitions.

"We are excited to welcome Jeanine Guelee to ERASE Racism as a graduate student intern," said Elaine Gross, the organization's founder and president emerita. "She knows Long Island and its civil rights challenges well, she provides a locally raised graduate student's perspective, and she brings skills and ideas that will benefit ERASE Racism and our programmatic initiatives. We look forward to helping her expand her interest in civil rights advocacy."
