Daniel Street, Lindenhurst Middle Students Team Up For Monster Art Project

Second graders at Daniel Street Elementary and eighth graders at Lindenhurst Middle School collaborated on a cross-disciplinary art project.

LINDENHURST, NY — Students at Daniel Street Elementary School and Lindenhurst Middle School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently teamed up for a creative, cross-disciplinary monster-themed art project.

Last fall, second graders at Daniel Street designed their “perfect monsters,” naming each creation and illustrating its unique diet, habitat and superpowers. The students documented their ideas on “Imagine Your Perfect Monster” worksheets, which were then shared with Jacqueline Korsen’s eighth-grade art classes at the middle school.

Using only the younger students’ written descriptions, eighth graders brought the monsters to life. Students in the 3D art class sculpted clay figures and built open dioramas to showcase each monster’s world, while students in the 2D art class created imaginative “monster behind the door” illustrations.

The project culminated in a special January meet-up at the middle school library, where the second graders saw their original ideas transformed into artwork and met the middle school artists who created them.

Standout creatures included Zoey, a friendly gymnastics-loving monster who enjoys chocolate ice cream and lives in South Carolina, and Max, a happy, fluffy, invisible monster who lives down the road and loves chicken and rice.
