Gone Fishin’: Season Hitting the Pinnacle
Lots of big hauls and catches are being reported from the Inlet.
The fishing season is as hot as the mainland temperatures lately, and most fish are running heavy. The big ones are here, and the early fall blitzes aren’t too far away.
The Northstar II’s Saturday trip had anglers limiting out in less than two hours of fluking. One angler tried the captain's suggestion of using a bass assassin with a green gulp and white teaser, and reeled in a fat flattie with short work.
Aboard the Captree Princess the early morning fluke trip had 15 keepers to about seven pounds. A 6.56-pound flattie was caught by five-year-old Samantha Collazo, assisted by her Aunt Dawn.

The Fishfinder II out of Captree went for ocean fluke last Friday east of the inlet in 70-feet of water .Steady catches of both keepers and shorts were on the agenda, and also delivered a good mix of sea bass and porgies near the reef. The pool fluke that trip was just shy of eight pounds.
Pete from Suffolk Bait and Tackle reported another spectacular week as the shop was witness to several outstanding fluke catches that were reeled in southeast and southwest of the Fire Island Inlet in approximately 80 to 95 feet of water. Pete noted that the shop weighed in fish up to 8.6 pounds.

“Frankie from the shop managed two keeper fluke in front of the lighthouse using Blue Frog bucktails, topped off with local spearing,” Pete said. He also mentioned that shop regular Alan Maloney fished on the Salty Dog from Amityville with his buddy Frank Shea last Saturday, and the duo were southeast of the inlet in 90 feet of water. They limited out on fluke to 6.24 pounds, while using local squid and local spearing.
“Snapper fishing has been awesome at the Babylon Village Dock, and just the same for the blue claw crabs,” he added.
