Harding Avenue Elementary 'Reads Around the World'

Harding Avenue Elementary School’s PTA sponsored Parents as Reading Partners, a statewide reading program that encourages students to read at home with parents and hosts schoolwide events to establish good reading habits. This year’s theme at Harding Avenue was “Read Around the World.”

PARP kicked off with a special student assembly, Around the World with Lou Del Bianco, a multicultural program that combines storytelling, theater, and music. Harding students were invited on stage to help act out stories that reflect different cultures.

As part of the festivities, PARP included a Read Aloud, Gather a Crowd evening. During the evening, families spent time together visiting classrooms to hear stories about different countries read by community members and special guests. Special guests also went into classrooms to read to students during the school day. Superintendent Richard Nathan read “Wild about Books” to Nicole Innamorato’s third-graders.

Students also enjoyed special dress-up days, such as Wacky Wednesday, where students wore mismatched clothing, crazy hat day, and wear a shirt that everyone can read day.

“The program was extremely successful this year, with 100 percent participation,” said principal Brian Chamberlin.
