Lindenhurst Historical Society Inducts New Officers

Society holds its meeting inside of Bower Elementary, discussing the history one of Lindy's oldest schools.

The Lindenhurst Historical Society inducted its new officers and members at a meeting held last week at Edward W. Elementary School – a day before it ended its final school year to mark the memory and service of one of the first elementary schools to Lindenhurst community.

A planned tour of was canceled due to the state of building while teachers were emptying their classrooms. However, the closing didn’t deter the Society’s meeting and program detailing the elementary school’s history.

The school, opened in 1953, is one of few remaining original educational buildings still standing in Lindenhurst – third only to the current , opened in 1932, and sister school in North Lindenhurst.

Several past students and faculty recalled their times at Bower, many surrounding former teacher and principal Andy Macieko. He recalled a past student corresponding with him and thanking him for pushing her while she was enrolled at Bower.

Then from the sentimentality of the shared moments it was on to the business of the night.

Marian Santoli was installed as the new president, replacing Anna Jaeger – a Lindy resident and former third-grade teacher at William Rall.

Prior to taking the helm as Society president on , Santoli served as the Society board’s vice president for the last two years.

Lindenhurst Memorial Library Director Peter Ward, who was not present, was installed as vice president.

Current Secretaries Alice Cromarty and Marianne Guglieri and current Treasurer Vera Meinhold were sworn in to continue their positions.

Outgoing President Jaeger said it was “a great honor and pleasure to serve the society” for the past two years. The Society helped create scholarships for two Lindenhurst High School seniors this past year under Jaeger’s direction. Jaeger will remain as a trustee.
