LINDENHURST, NY — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented times. Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these everyday heroes.

Karen Smith nominated her son-in-law, Lindenhurst resident Nicholas Desjardin. Smith wanted to honor Desjardin for all his hard work as a volunteer EMT and firefighter.

Here's what Smith had to say about her son-in-law:

Nick is an EMT for Northwell Health working the front lines right in the heart of the pandemic. Nick works in Queens assisting FDNY going right into the homes of people having Covid-19. Many of these homes have several families living in them with multiple family members infected. Working with limited gear he still went into these home to transport some of the sickest people to the hospital. Not knowing if if his patients made it or not he did all he could in his role as an EMT to get them help.
Nick is a wonderful husband to Kaitlyn and the best dad and little girl would want to his precious Zoey. The measures he went through before entering their home proves how much he loves them. Nick is a true front line hero. Nick is selfless and would give his shirt off his back to help or save someone.

Thanks for all that you do Nicholas Desjardin!
