Improve Quality of Life with Functional Fitness Training at the Great South Bay YMCA

The Great South Bay YMCA recently introduced its newest program, Functional Training.

Long Island, NY (November XX, 2015) – The Great South Bay YMCA recently introduced its newest program, Functional Training. Members can now prepare their bodies for real-life situations through classes focusing on functional exercise, which simultaneously uses multiple muscles and joints to improve endurance, strength and coordination. By working with a trainer twice a week, members should see improvements in their ability to perform everyday activities, such as grocery shopping or yardwork.

“This is a great eight-week exercise program we are extremely excited to offer at our Great South Bay location,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “The program caters to all of your muscle groups, preparing your body for everyday activities. This technique is adapted from physical therapists who work with patients to be able to perform regular routines once they return home after an injury.”

Functional training uses multiple muscles and joints to improve muscular endurance, overall strength, coordination, balance, posture and agility. A circuit program combines use of a heavy bag, kettlebells, medicine balls and battle ropes to incorporate strength and power moves while burning calories and fat.

“Our trainers will work one–on–one or in a group setting with the participant to focus on muscle groups which promote stabilization,” said Connie McDonaugh, Health and Wellness Director at the GSB YMCA. “We have seen amazing improvements by focusing on core muscle groups, which are then engaged while doing everyday activities. Whether you’re raking leaves or shoveling snow out of your driveway, these tasks are a lot simpler when your body is properly conditioned to work together as a system.”
