Lindenhurst Business Receives PSEG LI Scam Call
The local business reported receiving a call from a scammer claiming to be from PSEG this week.

LINDENHURST, NY - An employee at a Lindenhurst business recently reportedly received a call from a scammer claiming to be from PSEG Long Island, according to a report in News12.
An employee at Ability Transmissions, located on 646 W Montauk Highway, answered the call from the scammer who asked for confidential account information before hanging up the phone.
“He actually asked me what account did I pay from? I said, who are you, I’m not giving you my account information.” Susan, the employee who answered the call, told News12. “Well, we are going to come down and shut off your electric.”

After hanging up, the employee called PSEG who confirmed the call was a scam.
In a statement, PSEG Long Island told Patch that the company is working closely with law enforcement to gather information from customers victimized by scammers.

"We are a member of Utilities United Against Scams," the statement read. "Through the organizations efforts, over 1,500 scam phone numbers have been shut down. PSEG Long Island takes the safety of our customers very seriously and we encourage them to be cautious of calls claiming to be from PSEG Long Island."
According to PSEG, scammers will often call or email a customer, warning that service will be shut off within a matter of hours due to unpaid bills unless the customer purchases a pre-paid card or arranges for a transfer via MoneyGram.
There have even been reports that some can spoof caller ID systems to display “PSEG Long Island.”
PSEG Long Island states that the company does not accept payments of electric bills via pre-paid debit cards, or by MoneyGram or similar transfers.
"Our customers should never arrange payment or divulge account or personal information over the telephone unless they are certain they are speaking to a PSEG Long Island representative," the statement reads.
If customers have doubts, they should call the utility directly at 1-800-490-0025 or visit a local PSEG Long Island Customer Service Center.
