LINDENHURST, NY — A Lindenhurst High School senior was named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Veronica Szygalowicz has been recognized nationally and will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

As one of the 2,500 finalists nationwide, Szygalowicz was placed among the top students who are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. She was chosen for all her achievements during her high school career, including taking the most rigorous Honors and Advanced Placement courses and ranking number one in her class, resulting in her being named valedictorian.

In addition, she is the captain of the track team, All-League in the 1500 meter, All-County in cross-country and the undefeated League III champion who qualified for the state and federation championships. Szygalowicz also plays the flute in the symphonic band, serves as the vice president of the National Honor Society, co-president of the school’s DECA club and has volunteered her time at Stony Brook University Hospital.

"I am honored to have been chosen as a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship," she said. "At the same time, I am grateful for everyone who has helped me throughout the entire process, especially my parents, my guidance counselor, Mrs. Hocoluk, and my English teacher, Ms. Buechner, who have provided me with valuable assistance in completing the application portion of the competition. It is so rewarding to see all that hard work finally pay off."
