LINDENHURST, NY — Several Lindenhurst High School students who returned from a recent trip to Italy fell ill, Superintendent of Schools Daniel Giordano said in a letter to the community Monday. The students who traveled over February break started feeling sick on the flight home, he wrote.

The students reported various gastric symptoms and in some cases, fever. Giordano did not mention exactly how many students were sick.

"We are also aware that this unfortunate event has caused some concern among the school community as we have been immersed with information about the coronavirus in the media," Giordano wrote.

In response to these reports, the school nurses have been in contact with the Suffolk County Health Department. Giordano said health officials believe the gastric symptoms the students experienced are a result of norovirus, flu or possibly even salmonella. They are in "no way reflective" of the respiratory symptoms or symptoms of pneumonia, which accompany the coronavirus.

Giordano advised anyone with gastric symptoms — nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever — to see a doctor and get tested for the flu.
