Lindenhurst Middle School Students Choose Kindness

Students, teachers and parents come together to discuss an inspirational piece of literature,

Students of Lindenhurst Middle School recently enjoyed an event that celebrated the culmination of a Community Read program that began earlier in the year.

Family Finale Night was an opportunity for students, teachers and parents to come together to discuss an inspirational piece of literature, Wonder by R. J. Palacio. Wonder is a novel that revolves around an ordinary student, Auggie Pullman, who was born with Craniofacial differences.

“Our hope was to plant the seed of family reading and initiate conversations at home,” said teacher and event organizer Donna White. “We want students to embrace the message inspired by Auggie Pullman that ‘When given the choice of being right or being kind, choose kind.’”

Students and their families participated in many novel-related activities including character studies, acrostic poems and character tweets. One activity had students write a letter to a young man who has faced challenges similar to that of the novel’s protagonist. Other events included a poster contest and raffle for students who “got caught reading” the novel in school. The grand prize was a Kindle Fire.
