Lindenhurst Residents Vote Down Plan to Sell Bower School Property to Developer
BREAKING: The proposal was easily defeated Tuesday.
The Lindenhurst community has spoken.
Residents voted down the school district's proposal (by a margin of 1,004 to 606) to sell the Bower Elementary School property to the Engel Burman Group, which had plans to build senior housing on the Montauk Highway site.
“This has been a long process and we have appreciated the community’s input throughout the various stages,” Lindenhurst Superintendent Daniel Giordano said on the district's Facebook page after the results were tallied.

The district now has three options:
- The Board can choose to keep the building and revisit an appropriate use for the building
- The Board can choose to bring the same referendum before the community for voter approval a second time
- The Board can begin the process all over again (soliciting buyers for the property and bringing offers to the Board etc.)
The district will continue to keep the community informed of the process moving forward, Giordano said.
