LINDENHURST, NY — While there still have not been any confirmed cases of the corornavirus in the Lindenhurst area, the local school district announced it will be closing schools Monday.

"As the information provided and guidance offered from the local health authorities and the state regarding COVID-19, continues to evolve and change shape, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to determine the most appropriate course of action for our district," Superintendent Daniel Giordano wrote in a letter to the community. "We have been following the recommendation of the Suffolk County Health Department to not close schools unless there was a confirmed case in the district. However, at this point and as community concern and the need for social distancing continues to grow, we feel it is in the best interest of the health and safety of our students and staff to deviate from that approach."

Despite the fact that there have been no confirmed cases in the district, officials decided to use one of the two snow days on Monday, with the possibility that the closure could be extended through Friday, March 20.

During the closure, the district will perform a more thorough and deep cleaning of the buildings and "assess any need to take further action," according to Giordano.

In addition, the district has been granted permission by the state education department to serve bagged meals to all grade level students containing both breakfast and lunch from the back entrance of the Lindenhurst High School cafeteria (by the gymnasium) from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on any of the days in which schools are closed during the week.
