Lindenhurst Students Celebrate Reading

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday and the national literacy movement Read Across America Day, students throughout the Lindenhurst School District recently enjoyed shared reading experiences.

Some of the district elementary schools, such as Daniel Street and Harding Avenue, welcomed student council members from Lindenhurst High School, who shared a few familiar stories together as book buddies.

The young students relished the time they shared with the older students. Older students enjoyed mentoring the impressionable elementary students.

“We have an opportunity to positively influence these children and show them that reading is a great thing,” explained 10th-grade student council member Senna Tadfie, who read to her sister’s class at Daniel Street Elementary School.

At the middle school, students experienced a similar afternoon of shared reading. Throughout the day, school administrators and educators took turns reading to various classes in the school’s library.

“Middle school students take away a great deal from a day like this,” explained Jennifer Freedman, Middle School library media specialist. “Most of the reading they do at this level tends to revolve around obtaining information or exploring educational topics, which is obviously important. However, taking the time to share a story with them, in a relaxed environment, reminds them that reading can and should still be something that is enjoyable as a recreational past-time.”
