Lindenhurst Students 'RED'y to Live a Drug-Free Life

Students throughout the district celebrate Red Ribbon Week.

The Lindenhurst School District celebrated Red Ribbon Week during the week of Oct. 27-31 with various amusing and educational activities. Students throughout the district were encouraged to dress according to a daily theme, such as wearing neon colors to demonstrate a bright future for those who say no to drugs or athletic jerseys to “team up against drugs.”

Special presentations took place throughout the week. Educational presenter Janice Buckner performed songs to encourage healthy living for Harding and West Gates Avenue Elementary School students, along with the students of the other district elementary schools. High school students took part in the powerful “Eyes Wide Open” program illustrating the dangers of drug use. Several schools, including William Rall and Daniel Street Elementary Schools, planted tulip bulbs as a reminder that if students don’t do drugs they will blossom.

Students pledged to live drug free lives in a myriad of ways. Those in Albany and Alleghany Avenue Elementary Schools made their pledges as white doves were released. They were urged to “Say no to drugs, say yes to life and make their promise as the doves took flight.” At the Middle School, eighth-grade health classes signed a pledge on a red tracing of their own hands as a reminder to “keep their hands off drugs.”
