In conjunction with their studies on Native Americans, third-grade students at West Gates Elementary School recently experienced “Journey into Native American Territory,” an interactive educational program that brought the culture and technological advances of Native American civilization to life.
Students had a firsthand opportunity to see a variety of artifacts, including tools used for building shelters, creating clothing and cooking meals, as well as hunting instruments used to survive. Also on display were animal cloths and skins used for protection from the elements.
This interactive experience painted a vivid picture for these students of what life was like for the Native Americans.

At Harding Avenue Elementary School, fourth-grade students completed their unit on the Iroquois community in spectacular fashion. Students studied the various components of the culture and chose to demonstrate their understanding of the topic by completing a project from a list that included ideas such as constructing a 3-D Iroquois home or creating a piece of pottery in the Iroquois style.
“We did a lot of nonfiction research using books and the Internet,” said fourth-grader Emma Littmann. “Using what we learned, we got to share our projects in a way that was more fun than just telling people.”
