Lindy Lacrosse Falls to Sachem East

Six unanswered goals in second half dooms Bulldogs.

John Vigh and Eric Martin each notched a hat trick, including three of the team's six goals to begin the second half, as the Arrows defeated Lindenhurst, 11-6, Tuesday afternoon.

It was Sachem's first victory after dropping their first four to start the season. The Arrows enjoyed a week away from the field after a devastating quadruple-overtime loss to Middle Country on April 6.

"I’m glad for the kids because they’ve been working hard all week," said East Head Coach Rob Murphy. "It feels good to get our first win and break the ice."

Lindenhurst was unable to convert a number of key chances throughout the game, hitting the post from within feet of the goal each time.

"We hit a lot of pipes, and they got a lot more second chances too," said Bulldogs Head Coach Tom McCandless. "They were playing with emotion, they hadn’t won yet this year. They had a lot more riding on it. They had more emotion that we did today."

The teams traded leads early in the contest before Bulldogs (2-3, 4-3) attackman David George scored his second goal of the game with just five seconds remaining before halftime.

Lindenhurst was unable to get on the board again until George's third goal with just 4:12 to play, stopping a run of six unanswered Arrows (1-3, 1-4) goals.

"I think we came out and we were pretty intense in the third quarter," said Murphy. "Outscoring them 4-0 in the third quarter, that helped. That set the tone for the rest of the game."

Though still early, this game could prove to be costly for Lindenhurst's playoff chances, who fell below .500 with the loss.

"It hurts because we’re all fighting for that 12th spot," said McCandless. "Losing to Middle Country, and then losing here, it hurts. There’s a lot of games left, but if it pans out the way it does, we may fall short. We’ve got to catch somebody now, and we’ve got to rely on some other people to do well. It’s going to be close. It’s going to be very close."

In addition to Martin and Vigh, East got a pair of goals from Joe Eisman and A.J. Solomito.

"The middle-of-the-pack teams, we’re all similar," said Murphy. "We’re going to knock each other off."

Colton Haupt added two goals for the Bulldogs, and Steve Zolezzi also scored.
