Students throughout the Lindenhurst School District recently took part in P.S. I Love You Day.
The day of awareness and acceptance was established when West Islip student Brooke DiPalma lost her father to suicide in 2010. His last words to her were “I love you.”
At the high school, members of the student council and peer leadership group expanded upon the idea to create “Lead with Love Week.” Throughout the week students worked to help brighten someone’s day by sharing messages of caring on lockers and random acts of kindness such as handing out Tootsie-pops. On the last day of the week, students donned purple, the color of the anti-bullying movement, to show their support for those who feel alone because they do not feel accepted. The idea is that by telling someone how you feel about them, you can change their day and make them feel less alone.

“I hope students realize that we all struggle with the same things and so it is important that as a community we help each other out,” said student Scott Halper.
