In December 2013, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law an expansion of the Veterans Tax Exemption, which allows school districts across the state to authorize real property tax exemptions (of school taxes) for veterans who have served during times of war.
At a special community workshop set for Nov. 12, the Lindenhurst Board of Education will discuss the expansion of the Veterans Tax Exemption and the implications on the Lindenhurst community. Based on information received from the Town of Babylon, there are 949 properties within the school district that could claim a Veterans Tax Exemption at some level.
If all of these properties claimed their basic exemption, there would be a shift in the school tax burden to non-veteran households of an additional $40 per year or $3.33 per month. If all of those eligible claimed their maximum exemption, the school tax burden to non-veteran households would be an additional $110 per year or $9.17 per month. The town has no Gold Star Parents at this time.
