Lindy Students Honor the Season

Throughout the Lindenhurst School District, students honored the Thanksgiving season in a variety of ways.

First-grade students in Sandra Lercari, Christy Dallao and Carissa Volpe’s classes at Alleghany Avenue Elementary School immersed themselves in Native American culture. Donna Wahlenburg of the Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences in Northport visited the students and brought several Native American artifacts.

At West Gates Avenue Elementary School, kindergarten students in Doreen Earl, Parvaneh Hale and Rosanne Mulholland’s classes presented a history of the first Thanksgiving for their parents through poetry and song.

Daniel Street Elementary School fourth-graders explored Native American culture through the Journeys into American Indian Territory program. While members of the Student Council, Leaders Club and National Junior Honor Society at Lindenhurst Middle School conducted their annual food drive. Students collected enough non-perishable goods to create Thanksgiving dinner boxes for 10 families within the community. Students also collected change donations during lunch periods and were able to purchase 10 gift cards for local supermarkets so that those families could purchase their Thanksgiving turkeys.

Harding Avenue Elementary School students also donated non-perishable foods for local families. They did so as a means to participate in the annual Turkey Trot created by physical education teacher Richard Price in which students run around the grounds of the school, combining physical fitness with altruism.
