Man Arrested In Suffolk Stabbing Death: Police

COPIAGUE, NY —A man was arrested and charged after a fatal stabbing in Copiague this week, police said.

Gherson Lopez, 28, of Copiague, was arrested after Jose Argueta-Canales, 30, also of Copiague, was found stabbed to death on Barcellona Place on Monday, Suffolk County police said.

Lopez was arrested at 7 p.m. Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder, police said. He was held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday, police said.

Argueta-Canales was found on the ground next to a deli on Barcellona Place at 7:40 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

An autopsy will be performed by personnel from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.
