LINDENHURST, NY - A West Babylon man was indicted on a murder charge on Thursday for fatally hitting a man with his car after a fight in a Long Island bar parking lot last month, according to Suffolk County DA Timothy Sini.

On March 23, Shatik Canady got into a fight with 28-year-old Kawon Williams, of Wyandanch in the parking lot of BrewHaus Pub on 111 N. Wellwood Avenue, the DA said.

During the fight, 41-year-old Canady struck Williams with an ice scraper before returning to his car and pursuing Williams in the parking lot, the DA said.

Williams attempted to avoid Canady, hiding behind other cars and objects in the parking lot, but Canady continued the pursuit, according to the DA.

He then intentionally struck Williams with his car before fleeing the scene of the incident, the DA said.

Williams was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he was pronounced dead.

Canady was apprehended by the police 16 hours after the incident on Chelsea Avenue in North Babylon while driving the same car used in the murder, the DA said.

He allegedly tried to evade police by refusing to stop the vehicle, but was caught and arrested, according to the DA.

In addition to upgrading the charges, Judge Richard Ambro raised Canady's bail to $1 million cash or $2 million bond.

Canady's lawyer, Joseph Hanshe, tried to argue against the high bail stating that Canady has a full-time job and three kids, Newsday reports.

He is due back in court on May 3. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

“This is obviously a dangerous individual,” Sini said. “He inserted himself into an argument with a complete stranger, escalated that fight to the point of physical violence, and then ended the altercation by murdering the victim. The victim tried to get away, tried to hide, but the defendant was relentless, ultimately mowing the victim down and murdering him in cold blood.”
