Middle Schoolers Making Maps

Lindenhurst Middle School students have been exploring their community this summer.

Lindenhurst Middle School Students who are participating in the Extended School Year Summer Program housed at Daniel Street School have been exploring their community.

The class, led by teacher Kristine Chimienti with support from Consultant Support teacher Jillian Rutigliano, discussed and researched community helpers as well as the various components that make up a community. This led to conversations about possible career opportunities.

This multidisciplinary lesson required that students demonstrate their skills in mathematics to measure, design and create their own homes in addition to a student-selected building in the community. Once the replicas were completed, students used cardinal and intermediate directions to place their community building onto a large map of the Lindenhurst community that was also constructed in the classroom.

This hands-on lesson was the culmination of a unit on community and mapping and also prepared the students for when they will explore the subject in greater depth during the next school year.
