Officers Chase Man With Gun Through Several Backyards: Police

AMITYVILLE, NY - An Amityville man was arrested after he was caught with a gun and tried to run away from officers on Friday night, according to Amityville Police.

A driver called police after seeing a man with a gun at the corner of Maple Drive and Broadway at about 7:11 p.m.

Officers responded and saw LaShawn Maybank, 41, who fit the description given by the driver, police said.

Maybank ran away after seeing the officers and they chased him through several yards to the backyard of a West Smith Street home, police said.

Maybank drew the gun from his waistband and threw it, police said.

After a violent struggle with the officers, he was taken into custody and a loaded .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun was found, police said.

Maybank was charged with second degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth degree criminal mischief, third degree criminal trespass and resisting arrest.
