Police Arrest Babylon Resident After Lindenhurst Break-In

LINDENHURST, NY — Suffolk County Police responding to a break-in in Lindenhurst Wednesday night arrested a Babylon resident they also accused of committing two burglaries and two attempted burglaries this week.

First Precinct Patrol officers responded to The Casual Foot Spa at 200 Montauk Highway following a report of a burglary in progress at 10:20 p.m. An attempted burglary at that business had taken place at 3:10 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found the front window of the store had been broken.

They entered and found a man burglarizing the store, police said. They took him into custody at approximately 10:35 p.m.

Following an investigation by First Squad detectives, Matthew Matheis was identified as the suspect in two burglaries and two attempted burglaries since Jan. 23 at these businesses:

• Burglary. The Heathy Spa, 761 Deer Park Ave., North Babylon, at 9 p.m. Jan. 23
• Attempted Burglary. The Laundry Room, 144 Route 109, West Babylon, at 6:50 a.m. Jan. 23
• Attempted Burglary. The Casual Foot Spa, 200 Montauk Highway, Lindenhurst, at 3:10 a.m. Jan. 24
• Burglary. The Casual Foot Spa, 200 Montauk Highway, Lindenhurst, at 10:35 p.m. Jan 24

Matheis, of 42 The Crescent, was charged with two counts of Burglary 3rd Degree, two counts of Attempted Burglary 3rd Degree, four counts of Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree and Possession of Burglar’s Tools.

The 30-year-old is being held at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Jan. 25.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
