Readers Rewarded at Alleghany
Elementary school students take part in reading contest sponsored by the Lindenhurst Youth Center.
Alleghany Avenue Elementary School took part in a reading contest sponsored by the Lindenhurst Youth Center between Nov. 3, 2014 and Jan. 9, 2015.
Students were encouraged to read as much as they could and were asked to log their reading minutes. Fifth-grader Michelle Kurianowicz, third-grader Robert Palak Jr. and kindergartener Joseph Zoeller took first, second and third place respectively.
All three received certificates signed by Lindenhurst Mayor Thomas Brennan, the head of the youth center Kathie Skopek, Principal Laura Newman and the library media specialist Kathryn Beleckas. In addition to the certificates the students won Barnes and Noble gift cards courtesy of the Youth Center.

“The students of Alleghany were so enthusiastic about the contest,” said Ms. Beleckas. “As a school, our students in grades K through 5 read over 45,000 minutes!”
