Every year I unfortunately gain another reason to walk in the Relay for Life. The relay is an amazing event that raises awareness and raises funds for our fight against cancer. This year I am walking for my friends family and community. I come from Lindenhurst NY a former relay community that has a long and unfortunate history with cancer. Every year another neighbor is diagnosed with a cancer and the pain is real but the hope is strong! I Also have friends and family who have had cancer or whom have passed at its hand.
Most recently a beautiful little girl named Avery. By blood we are not related but I have had the Pleasure of seeing this Beautiful girl grow. On August 12 2013 Avery was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Avery is 3 years old. Avery is currently fighting with the strength of 100 men and is truly showing her Bravery! Next I am walking for Tony. Tony is a family friend who is a great man! Tony is a loving Father and husband who is one of the hardest working men I know. Tony suffered Thyroid Cancer and has seemed to have won his fight being cancer free for a number of years now. Next is DR. Thornburg my professor and friend at Adelphi University. Dr. Thornburg has dedicated his life to human rights and making this world a better place on a domestic level and abroad. This man is responsible for saving thousands of lives and increasing the quality of lives for thousands more. He has selflessly devoted himself to community service and lets not forget to mention he has been Adelphi's professor of the year for 3 years in a row! DR .T had beaten cancer but it came back once again last winter. He is currently in remission once again and is still inspiring students on a daily basis.
Next and perhaps my most emotional is my Nanny. She was one of the most loving caring and amazing persons I have ever met. Her smile would instantly make you happy and her strength even in her fight with breast cancer. She inspired everyone around her. She died on August 1st 2005 due to complications with breast cancer treatments. I will walk for my personal reasons but we all will walk for a cure for a world with more birthdays and ultimately for hope!
