Teen Fled Scene After Hitting Woman In Wheelchair With Car: PD
The 18-year-old drove away with the wheelchair still lodged under his car after striking the woman, police say.
AMITYVILLE, NY - A Copiague teen was arrested after striking a woman in a wheelchair attempting to cross the street with his car and fleeing the scene on Tuesday night, according to Amityville Village Police.
Yonis Rivera, 18, was driving northbound on Broadway in Amityville and attempted to turn left onto Oak Street when he struck the 42-year-old woman, police said.
Rivera did not stop and fled the scene westbound on Oak Street for two blocks with the wheelchair lodged under the car, police said.

He then crashed into a telephone pole on Ketcham Avenue and tried to run away, police said.
When Rivera was caught by the officers a short time later, he asked them "Is the person I hit OK?" police said.

The Amityville Rescue Squad responded and transported the woman to Good Samaritan Medical Hospital in West Islip with non-life threatening injuries.
Rivera was charged with second degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident with injury and operating a motor vehicle without a license, police said.
He was released on a $500 cash bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 18.
