Two Lindenhurst High Students Rise To Top Of Class Of 2017

Congrats to co-valedictorians Ziad Sabry and Sofiya Yanyak!

The Lindenhurst High School Class of 2017 was comprised of 527 students. Two of those 527 worked hard enough to earn the title of valedictorian. This year’s co-valedictorians were Ziad Sabry and Sofiya Yanyak.

This fall, Ziad will attend Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania to pursue a major in astrophysics and a possible minor in biochemistry. Throughout his time at Lindenhurst High School, he has taken part in the Brookhaven National Laboratory High School Research Program, as well as the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Partners for the Future Program. He has co-authored a research article with a professor from Farmingdale State University and has been recognized with a meritorious award, as well as an honorable mention by the Long Island Science Congress and Long Island Science of Engineering Fair.

Ziad challenged himself academically and involved himself in extracurricular activities and athletics including National Honor Society, Student Council and Rotary Interact. This was in addition to running winter track, cross-country and playing tennis. An AP Scholar, he graduated from Lindenhurst with a NYS Advanced Regents Diploma and Mastery in Mathematics and Science.

Sofiya has also demonstrated her academic prowess and community awareness throughout her years in the district. She too has earned an Advanced Regents Diploma and Mastery in Mathematics and Science. She has been recognized as an AP Scholar, as well as a recipient of the President’s Volunteer Community Service Award. An active student, she was a member of the student government, Rotary Interact and DECA Club where she was named a regional winner twice. Sofiya was a member of the Business and Marketing Honor Society and served as vice president of the school’s debate club. She has attended the Mercy College Business Leadership Academy and served as a marketing intern for a local financial services company.

Sofiya will be attending Northeastern University in Massachusetts to pursue a degree in accounting with a possible minor in international business.
