LONG BEACH, NY — Long Beach lifeguards will have some new rescue gear this summer, as the Long Beach city council accepted the donation of eight surfboards at Tuesdays night’s meeting.
Per the city council’s agenda, the donation from Park Avenue surf shop Skuden Surf will outfit the city with six 10-foot “shredder” rescue boards and a pair of 9-foot shredder boards.
“These boards are used daily by the patrol, and are a vital part of their rescue operations,” City Manager Dan Creighton said.
The city council thanked Skuden Surf for the donation, accepting the boards in a unanimous vote. The 10-foot boards have an estimated value of $550 each, while the 9-foot boards have an estimated value of $500 each, the agenda said.
The rescue board donation comes just a week after a shark was spotted in the waters off of Long Beach, and less than a week after a swimmer off the south shore was bitten by an unknown aquatic animal.
