We Humans—So Horrific, So Terrific

Doors close; doors open. I collapsed in front of my bathroom sink, and a door to survival opened.

This post was contributed by a community member.

We see so much horror on TV and in newspapers, it sometimes looks as if humankind is not very kind.

Much of human action is madness, much of it is kind too, but the news media doesn’t lean to the kind.

It doesn’t sell.

You’ve heard it too often: if it bleeds, it leads.

There’s a bottom-line need for that. And sadly, the bottom lines of life are often at our peril from fossil fuel to food.

But if you read my essays, you’ll notice I try to shine a light on the goodness of humankind, from Long Beach groups like lifeguards to Long Beach individuals like Hedy Page.

In addition to my post-Christmas collapse, I had an unbelievably painful gastic and hernia issue going on. I didn't want to call an ambulance for a "tummy ache"so I suffered at home till it went away, then went to my doctor.

My doctor told me the next time it happens, don't suffer, call an ambulance—go to the emergency room.

It did and I did.

The ambulance arrived with a Skudin aboard. You can’t swing a dead striper in Long Beach without hitting a Skudin serving humanity.

Cliff Skudin, the ambulance attendant, suggested I go to our Long Beach Mt. Sinai facility rather than the hospital, where I wanted to go.

He said I won’t have to wait and I’ll get fantastic treatment; he was right. We have wonderful people serving us in Long Beach and I love writing about them.

This time, however, I’m reaching beyond Long Beach to shine some light a bit further on Long Island.

Yes, it started in the wee hours, two nights after Christmas when I collapsed in front of my bathroom sink.

That began a journey that showed me a change was needed, a change that many of us fail to take.

But that was what was needed in my healthcare life, a change to fresh eyes which ultimately improved my life dramatically.

I’d like to share this journey with you. Please read, We Humans—So Horrific, So Terrific.

Be well,

Leebythesea
