Cat Rescued From Elevated Long Beach Home: PHOTOS

When a cat became trapped in an elevated home in Long Beach, rescue teams swooped in to help.

LONG BEACH, NY — Rescue teams have successfully rescued a cat that became trapped inside an elevated home in Long Beach. Police called the city's fire department around 9:45 a.m. Sunday to help remove the animal.

Firefighters climbed wooden pallets that hold up the home, wrangled the cat into a carrier and then lowered the crate down to an animal control officer on the ground.

The cat was evaluated and taken to the Long Beach Animal Shelter, the fire department wrote in a Facebook post.

Melissa McClellan, director of the shelter, told Patch on Sunday the animal was eating, drinking and using the bathroom.

"The cat was brought in this morning," said McClellan. "He seems ok. I'm not sure how long he was in the house for but probably at least a week."

The cat, which she estimated is between 8 months and 1 year old, might be feral, meaning it does not like human contact whatsoever. But she noted the animal hasn't been pinning its ears and hissing as much as most fully feral cats. He only gets "a little angry" when staffers put their hands in the cage.

"We're trying to let him settle in before we can assess whether he's a social cat that can be socialized and put up for adoption, or if he would he can be a candidate for TNR, which is trap, neuter and release," she said.

It'll be a week or so before that determination will be made.

Patch has reached out to the fire department for further details and will update when we hear back.
