Common Core Math Scores Rise, English Scores Fall on Long Island
State Education Department releases 2014 Common Core testing scores.

Math scores rose and English scores dropped on the 2014 Common Core exams on Long Island, according to the State Education Department.
EngageNY reported “ significant statewide progress” in math scores across New York State, including in Long Island schools. “ Slight progress” was reported in ELA scores, though scores dropped on Long Island.
In 2014, 43.4 percent of Long Island students passed math compared to 37.5 percent last year, according to the report. English scores reportedly dropped from 39.6 percent in 2013 to 36.8 percent in 2014.

The latest results may have been skewed by the 20,000 or so Long Island students who opted out of exams in 2014, reported Newsday.
“I think this is only the start, unless the State Education Department listens to us and makes significant changes in the testing system,” founder of the Long Island Opt-Out organization Jeanette Deutermann told Newsday.
