The Heart of the Arts: Woman Art by Brenda Chapman
The Heart of the Arts is a series of articles offering an intimate glimpse at our talented Arts In The Plaza artists.
Brenda Chapman creates a space with a lively spirit. There was a sense of dedication and love towards her work that I felt. By both being drawn to the vibrant colors of her artwork, to the delicious smelling soaps—this was an artist that I had to learn a little more about.
Brenda has been creating for over 25 years. She expressed that there “...wasn’t a reason why I began creating—it just happened.” Her first art fair was at Arts In The Plaza because she was creating for years but it was always been just for her. She is one of the original artists, and by being at Arts In The Plaza, she is able to share her work with others.
She has always been a “mixed-media artist.” She creates through her “thought-process" which coincides with "...what she is feeling.” The soaps are a continuation of her partner’s business. Her partner was the soap maker and had a large following. She passed away last year, so Brenda took over her business and started to make the soaps—and so her partner continues to live on.

Some of her favorite pieces to make are the boxes. She started the making the boxes last year, but they are new to fairs this year. Over the years, her art has transitioned from a “light perspective to a broadened view.” Her ultimate passion is doing what she does already—art. But, she also loves the television show, “Jeopardy.”
