Long Beach Approves Trash Code Change At City Council Meeting

LONG BEACH, NY — The City of Long Beach is set to see some changes to its trash code, specifically for trash placed outside food service establishments, after the city council approved a change to ordinances covering trash at its Aug. 4 meeting.

Per the new trash ordinance, businesses that serve food will have to put their trash out for collection by the city every day that they’re open.

City Manager Dan Creighton has called these trash changes “common sense,” and said at a council meeting earlier this summer that the city has been trying to get these changes made for “years.”

An earlier version of the ordinance would have required that businesses put their trash in a solid receptacle with a covered lid, for security reasons, but that section of the ordinance was struck from the code prior to voting amid concerns from the council.

Among the concerns with the solid trash can plan was the number of dumpsters or garbage cans that businesses — especially in more heavily congested areas of the city — would need to buy and keep on their property to store all of the trash.

The city council unanimously approved the trash code change as part of a block vote on its agenda.

Earlier this summer, Sanitation Superintendent Devin Parker said the new trash ordinance would be, “the next step of keeping [the city] clean.”
