Long Beach Jetty Reconstruction Project Completed

With the jetties complete, work will start soon on replenishing the beach and building a large sand dune.

The Army Corps of Engeineers has completed work on the Long Beach jetty project, building 15 new jetties for the coastline stretching along the barrier island.

According to Newsday, the work has completed and crews are now working on cleaning up debris left on the beach. The work started last year after being in the planning stages for a long time — well before Hurricane Sandy hit.

The jetties will help protect the beach from erosion. The jetties will help keep the beach where it belongs during storms.

The next phase of the project is to import sand to replenish the beach, as well as construct a large sand dune to help block floodwaters during storms. The construction of the jetties caused intermittent closures of the beach last year, but that won't be a problem this summer.
