Long Beach Police Commissioner Retiring Over $60K Pay Cut
Long Beach police Commissioner Michael Tangney will retire after 42 years as the City Council proposed cutting his pay to about $175,000.

LONG BEACH, NY — Long Beach Police Department Commissioner Michael Tangney announced his retirement last week after the proposed 2020-21 city budget would cut his salary by $60,000.
According to the Long Beach Herald, Tangney, 64, will be retiring at the end of the month after 42 years in the Long Beach Police Department. The $60,000 pay cut would reduce his salary to about $175,000.
The cut is part of across-the-board spending reductions the city is considering to start getting its debt under control. The City Council said past administrations overestimated revenue and never brought spending in line with the actual cash flow the city had, leading to a $14 million deficit.

In addition to his time with the police department, Tangney also served as interim city manager for a little more than a year when Jack Schnirman left the post after he was elected Nassau County Comptroller.
