Long Beach Woman Brings Mortars To Police HQ, Prompts Evacuation

Officials say the belonged to her late husband, a veteran, and she wanted to get rid of them.

Bomb Squad officers removed two mortar shells from Long Beach Police Department headquarters on Tuesday morning.

According to the city, the widow of a Korean War veteran came to Long Beach Police Headquarters Tuesday with two mortar shells that had belonged to her husband to find out how she could dispose of them.

Commissioner Michael Tangney had the police and fire department headquarters evacuated, but because of the location of the shells, saw no reason to evacuate City Hall, the city said.
