Missy Miller Sworn in as Representative for 20th Assembly District

Joined by her family and colleagues, Assemblywoman Melissa “Missy” Miller, a Republican from Atlantic Beach, was sworn into office on Jan. 3 in the Legislative Office Building, officially becoming the Assembly representative for the 20th District.

“I look forward to working in Albany and representing all of the hardworking families of the 20th District,” she said. “We’re going to fight to create new opportunities in our communities and ensure that state government is responsive and effective.”

Miller is a staunch advocate for New Yorkers with disabilities. She traveled to Albany to make the case for the Compassionate Care Act, legislation that allows physicians to prescribe medical marijuana. She has been volunteering in a pediatric-residency training program through Northwell Health for more than 20 years. She has also been instrumental in enhancing Lawrence High School’s Life Skills program.

Miller and her family have faced tremendous adversity. Her daughter Melanie passed away due to complications stemming from a neurodegenerative disease when she was only seven years old. Her son Oliver struggles with his own disabilities stemming from an inter-uterine stroke he suffered before being born. Miller understands the struggles families face; she is emphasizing constituent services to help families like her own.

“It’s important that my constituents know my door is always open,” she said. “We’re going to take constituent service very seriously. I want to be able to help when people tell me they’re hurting or they have a serious problem because I know what that feels like.”
