Peaceful Crowd Of 1,500 Gathered At Long Beach: Police

Police say no arrests were made, but some did throw bottles at officers and direct fireworks towards them.

LONG BEACH, NY — Long Beach police provided details on the crowd of hundreds of students who gathered on the beach Saturday evening.

According to the police, around 8 p.m. on June 20, about 1,500 people gathered at Ocean Beach Park near Edwards Boulevard. The unannounced gathering consisted mostly of high school students from Long Beach and surrounding districts, police said.

The Long Beach police called in assistance from the Nassau County Police Department to help contain the crowd. In a press release about the gathering, police said the crowd of students was "respectful and peaceful." However, a handful of the students threw bottles at police cars and set of fireworks towards police officers and pointed at a NCPD helicopter.

When the beach closed at 11 p.m., police say the crowd dispersed peacefully. There were no injuries and no arrests made.
