Developers Hope To Turn Vacant Building Into Place For Homeless Veterans

The $1.1 million renovation would create a place for up to 230 homeless veterans to live.

Two developers are looking to turn a vacant building in Hempstead into a home for Nassau County's homeless veterans.

According to Newsday, the building at 619 Fulton Ave. was once owned by Hofstra University. Now, developers are looking to spend $1.1 million to renovate it into Miracle City -- a place for homeless veterans.

The plan would be to have emergency housing in the basement for veterans coming off the streets, as well as long-term single rooms on the upper floors. All told, the facility could house 230 people. Veterans would not have to pay to stay at the facility. All of the costs would be covered by state and federal programs.
