See Where Long Beach’s First Electric Vehicle Charging Ports Could Be Installed

LONG BEACH, NY — Long Beach is set to construct its first electric vehicle charging stations after the city council approved a pair of grant awards and an order to purchase the charging stations at Tuesday’s council meeting.

At Tuesday night’s meeting, City Manager Dan Creighton said the eight charging stations would be placed along the southeast boundary of Kennedy Plaza.

“These would be the first publicly available charging stations in the city, if not the entire barrier island,” Creighton said.

The full cost of the purchase, $479,000, would be covered by a pair of grants: A $296,000 grant from New York’s DEC and a $183,000 grant from PSEG Long Island, Creighton said.

Creighton said the work for the stations would be undertaken by Lindenhurst-based Woodhollow Energy Partners.

According to councilman Michael Reinhart, this isn’t the first time the city has looked into EV charging infrastructure, but it’s a better deal than what has been on the table in the past.

“We actually reviewed a proposal, a couple of years ago, for EV charging stations, where it was all about revenue sharing,” Reinhart said. “Long Beach was going to have to pay a large portion of the install and share it with this other company, and the way [city officials] have worked this out, we are not paying for any of it and all of the revenue is going to come back to the city…it’s a vastly, vastly better deal for the city.”

According to city officials, the city will receive a bill from PSEG for the power that runs to charging stations, then be able to pay that bill with fees from charging vehicles.

The city did not list on its agenda when construction to install the charging stations would begin, nor was a date set at Tuesday's meeting.
